Citi Bike e-bike said 11 mi range on Berry St, died at Delancey — is the cold killing the gauge?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm pretty new to the e-bike thing. Last night I grabbed a gray e-bike at Berry St / North 12th around 6:15. The app said 11 miles of range, so I thought easy over the Williamsburg Bridge to Delancey. It did fine until the bridge climb, then the gauge dropped to 3 miles. By the time I got downhill on the Manhattan side it said 0 and the motor cut. I pedaled the rest maybe six blocks to the dock. Is that just cold battery stuff, or does the range guess always lie that much? Doesn't 11 miles mean 11 miles?

Nah, city e-bike range meters are more of a vibe than a number, especially on the older black/gray ones that have been out all day. The climb up the Williamsburg side can drain a beat battery fast. If it reads under 15 after 4pm, I assume I’ve got maybe the flat half of that. Best move is grab one at a dock that just got a battery swap if you can, or take a classic blue if you want predictability. If it dies under 2 miles you can usually dock within the same 45 and not get hit.

OO this is one of my favorite micro-rants!! Cold temps absolutely wreck the displayed range on the older Li-ion packs because the estimate is calculated from voltage under load, not actual state of charge. When you started climbing, the voltage sag made the battery management system think it was nearly empty! Then it recovers a bit on the downhill, but if the motor cut you were probably in a low-voltage protect mode. Have you tried the new white e-bikes with the integrated display? They’re heavier but they seem to estimate range better on bridge approaches! Also I swear the Berry St dock is cursed because they cycle through the same half-dead packs during the evening rush.

Thanks, that makes me feel less crazy. @CobbleHill_C I ended up docking a block later and it charged me the normal cap, so at least it wasn't worse. @ferryfanatic no I haven't tried the white ones yet — are those the ones with the wider deck? I mostly learned to keep the assist in low on the flat after this. Should I avoid any e-bike that shows under 15 miles, or is that too picky when the dock only has two left?

Bro the Berry/Williamsburg docks are battle stations at rush hour. I don't take an e-bike from there after 5 if it reads less than 18 and it's below 50 out. Too many dead ones get left. If the dock only has two and both under 15, walk one block to the next dock or take a classic blue. A heavy dead e-bike on the bridge bike path isn't worth the five minutes you save. Also they sometimes come back alive after a few minutes rest, but you don't want to find that out on the climb.

Okay this thread just explained my Monday. I got one on Kent Ave that said 13 and it crawled up the incline like a bag of rocks. I kept opening the app to see if I needed to end the ride, but my service dropped by the Willy B sign. Is there a reliable way to see which docks just serviced bikes, or do you just shake the bike and hope the battery clunks? Also I thought the gray bikes had more range than the white ones, so this is helpful!
