East Village backyard bar after 11 on a Wednesday — does one exist or is it all sidewalk crush?

I’ve got a friend visiting who thinks every bar with a backyard in the LES is some hidden garden. I keep telling her after 11 the backyard becomes a velvet rope situation except there’s no rope, just bodies. Are there any spots below 14th with actual outdoor space open weeknights where you can sit, hear the person next to you, and not wait 20 minutes for a beer?

Bonus if the jukebox doesn’t become a speaker war. I’ve done Ace Bar and Keybar back in the day but both got blown out. Someone tell me I’m wrong so I don’t have to schlep to Red Hook.

Been here a year and I still don’t understand the backyard math. I went to a place on St. Mark’s last Thursday around 10:30, back patio looked half empty from the door, but the bouncer said it was capacity. Is that just a thing?

Also do weeknights actually calm down after the 9–10 dinner crowd or is it all the same? Would love recs too—especially anywhere with a fire pit or actual heat lamp.

firstwinter, that capacity line is half real and half bouncer math. If the patio looks empty but they won’t let you back, it’s usually that the staff is short or they don’t want to bus the back that late.

If you want weeknight outdoor space below 14th, the scene is rough after 9. Try Drop Off Service early or Horseshoe Tavern for a back room that breathes. Not exactly outdoors, but you won’t be wearing someone’s cocktail. If you really need a table outside, go Tuesday or Wednesday before 8, or head deeper into Alphabet City. After 11 every half-decent patio is a shoulder-to-shoulder photo op. The only reliable outdoor space left is a bodega stoop.

WestVillage_W, that’s what I figured. I looked at my friend and said capacity is just a word after 10. The stoop rec is too real—I’ve had better nights on a 7th St stoop than half these patios.

Maybe I’ll drag her to Berlin. They’ve got that yard-ish bench situation, but it gets weird late. You’re right about Alphabet City though. 11th Street Bar still felt low-key last time I went, but that might have been a Tuesday. Anybody been recently on a weeknight?

I tried Mona’s last night. Not exactly a backyard, but we got a table in the back room and could actually hear each other. The jukebox competition was fierce though. Is 11th Street Bar still open late? I thought they closed on the earlier side.

Also if I shoot for 9:30 on a Wednesday, is that already too late to get a seat outside at any of these places? I keep making the mistake of showing up right when everyone else does.

Flatbush_Fi, 11th Street Bar is still decent if you post up Monday or Tuesday, but once the weather hits, every backyard turns into a swarm. firstwinter, 9:30 on a Wednesday is exactly the tight spot—go at 8 or after midnight, nothing in between.

Honestly the move below 14th is a dive with open front windows, not a garden. Sophie’s or The Library won’t give you sun, but they’ll give you sanity. If a fire pit is non-negotiable, you’re probably looking at Greenpoint or Red Hook.
