East Village heated patios after midnight—any left, or is it just sidewalk sheds?
#1

Hi all — new-ish to the East Village and trying to stretch outdoor drinking season. Last Friday I walked down 6th/A/B around 11:30 and every backyard I knew was dark or “full for private event.” Are there any actual heated patios/gardens that stay open past midnight in this area, or do I need to become a regular somewhere? I don’t mind a little cold, just don’t want to stand on the sidewalk with a plastic cup. Thanks!

oh oh yes this is my favorite niche topic!!! The trick is not rooftops, the wind kills them. You want ground-level or down-a-step back gardens with propane towers. There’s one on 7th between 1st and A that keeps the back open until at least 1, but the gate looks closed—you have to walk through the tiny dining room. Also ask if they have a radiant overhead strip, not just a space heater, HUGE difference. Have you tried Sable Smokehouse? Not sure if they still do it but their back room was shockingly warm in November.

Unpopular opinion but half those EV heated patios are just loud and crowded enough to make the warmth pointless. If you want actual late-night without a reservation, you might be better off at a plain old dive that leaves its front windows open and doesn't enforce a 90-minute table limit. The heat lamps are often theater; you’re still buying expensive cocktails because they lit a gas flame three feet above your head. What exactly are you optimizing for? Because if it’s conversation, the backyard with the heat strip is usually worse than the cramped barstool.

Firstwinter I’m not in EV but following. Do these places check for proof of having a table, like the host says the garden is full but there’s six empty chairs? I got burned by that in Greenpoint last fall. Also, what time do kitchens usually close if you just want fries with the drink? I just want to know the protocol so I don't look like a tourist.

After midnight in the East Village, the best move is skip the patio entirely. Go to the spot on 5th between B/C with the old phone booth in the back, sit near the open yard door, get a boilermaker. Warm enough inside, cold air blow in, no cover. If you really need outside, the place on 9th with the broken neon does the heater thing but they start herding people out around 12:45. It’s all about the doorway tables tbh.

Thanks everyone. Gowanus_G, the doorway tables thing makes sense—I probably walked past exactly that because the garden was hidden. DykerNewbie, I didn’t even think about the host game; I’d rather be told no than fake wait. Also, I went down a rabbit hole and it felt like bar “reservations” are becoming job applications—reminds me of the thread about Recruiter pre-screen asks for current base, bonus, and target before a call—still not okay? Recruiter pre-screen asks for current base, bonus, and target before a call—still not okay? Maybe I’ll try the non-garden dive and report back.

YES firstwinter try it and report back!! I care more about overhead radiant vs standing propane than I should. Also tip: if the back garden says closed, go around the corner and ask the bartender directly—sometimes the host doesn’t know the garden is still on. DykerNewbie hit the real issue though: half the “full” gardens are just saved for regulars. I'd love to see a spreadsheet of which places actually run heat after 11.
