Folding chair on a Brooklyn stoop: harmless or neighbor-note offense?
#1

Okay, I’ve lived in my building for six months and my apartment gets zero afternoon light, but the stoop gets nice sun from 4 to 6. I’d love to just bring my little folding chair down and sit with a coffee, but nobody else on the block does it. Is that weird? Do people treat stoops like public space or building property? I don’t want to be the new neighbor who colonizes the front steps. Also if I leave the chair folded inside the vestibule, is the super going to toss it? What’s the actual etiquette here?

Lived on a few blocks like this. If the stoop is right against the sidewalk, using a folding chair is fine as long as you're not blocking the door, the trash cans, or the neighbors' path. Don't leave it out overnight—that's how it disappears or becomes a whole building argument. Stoop culture is more claimed by owners; renters tend to get side-eye if they set up a full setup. A folding chair is low commitment. Try it once and see if anyone says good afternoon or just ignores you. If a neighbor has to step around you, that's your answer.

Ahh I have thoughts! First, the chair matters. Those webbed aluminum chairs are the gold standard for a reason—they don't scratch the stone, they dry fast, and they have just enough flex. Do not drag a wooden kitchen chair out there! The legs will chew up the stair treads and the super will absolutely hate it. Also angle matters: put it on the widest part of the landing, not the top step, and leave a clear lane for the door. Have you tried a little folding camp stool instead? Less back support but way easier to pass. Also broom-clean after yourself because the wind will blow your granola wrapper straight into the neighbor's areaway. It becomes a whole thing! I’m so glad people still want to use stoops instead of hiding inside.

I’m newish too and I get the worry. I just tried sitting on my front step with a cushion and a bottle of seltzer last Sunday. One neighbor walked by and said 'nice spot' and another gave me a look but said nothing. I think the look might have been because I was also blocking the recycling bins. Whoops. I’ll move next time. Related moving/paperwork pain: check the earlier thread Moved to Jersey City but payroll still taking NYC city tax—am I owed that back? about 'Moved to Jersey City but payroll still taking NYC city tax—am I owed that back?' That one saved me from spiraling about my own move. But yeah, folding chair seems fine if you don't create a trip hazard.

Thanks, all! I tried the folding chair after work yesterday and kept it on the second step with my coffee. No one said anything, but the woman from 2R gave me a small nod. I did put a piece of cardboard under the legs because our stoop has those old rough brownstones and I didn't want to leave a scrape. I think I might leave a cheap camp stool folded by the door and see if it survives the week. Flatbush_Fi, you're right that it feels more okay if you're not blocking the door. DumboSunset, now I'm looking at webbed aluminum chairs on the buy nothing app.
