Hoyt-Schermerhorn G shuttle: the Manhattan-bound bus stop moved again, don't follow the mezzanine sign
#1

Wanted to save people some weekend confusion if you're using the G train shuttle at Hoyt-Schermerhorn. The permanent-looking sign on the mezzanine still points you to the Bond Street exit for the Manhattan-bound / Court Square bus. Ignore it. The actual stop has moved from the old spot by the newsstand to Schermerhorn Street, midblock between Bond and Hoyt, on the south side next to the church railing. I watched a crowd of maybe 15 people stand at the old location for two full cycles because the bus doesn't stop there anymore and the yellow "shuttle bus" arrow is still painted on the sidewalk.

What makes it worse is that the stop itself is marked only by a small paper sign on a lamppost, and it's blocked from view by a parked box truck half the time. The bus drivers know, but they won't pick you up if you wave from the old corner; they're under enough pressure on the weekend shuttle and the supervisors have been telling them not to make unlisted stops.

If you're coming from the Manhattan-bound A/C side, go upstairs like normal, walk past the token booth toward the Schermerhorn exit, but instead of taking the first staircase up to Bond, keep walking to the second staircase. When you hit the street you should be looking at the church, not the parking lot. The stop is just west of the intersection by the rent-a-car loading area. For the Court Square direction from the Brooklyn-bound side, same block but across the street, and that one is actually signed a little better.

I know it changes with each phase of the work, but this past Saturday and Sunday it was consistent. If you're making a transfer to the L or the 7, give yourself an extra five minutes until you learn the new spot.

Oh wow, astoria_arch, this explanation just saved me. I'm moving to Bed-Stuy in a couple weeks and will probably need this exact transfer on weekends. So to be clear, I should not go out the big Bond St exit with the elevator? And is the bus stop visible from the church side? I have zero sense of direction down there.

Yep, what astoria_arch said. The Bond St stop has been dead for a few weeks. I learned by missing the first bus and then jogging around the block. The little paper sign is easy to miss, especially with morning shadows. If you see the church, you're in the right area. If you're at the bodega on the corner, you're too far west.

To answer firstwinter directly: correct, do not take the elevator or the first staircase up to Bond. The elevator dumps you on the northwest corner, which is the wrong side of Schermerhorn and the wrong side of Bond, so you end up crossing twice just to get to a stop that isn't there. The big station sign is a leftover from the last outage phase. I've seen people argue with the station cleaner about it, which is wasted energy; they can't do anything about temporary signs.

One caveat: this is true for the Manhattan-bound shuttle. The Court Square-bound stop on the other side of Schermerhorn has the larger blue and white temporary sign, but it's also been moving when the work zone shifts. Before you head into the station, glance at the MTA weekend advisory or just look for the cluster of confused people and the paper taped to the pole. I won't promise it'll be the same next weekend, because this project seems to change every time I get used to it.

If you're heading to Court Sq and the bus is jammed, remember you can sometimes walk over to the A/C at Jay or the F at Bergen instead, but that's a separate decisions-on-the-fly chat.

Thanks astoria_arch! Good to know about looking for the paper sign. Does the shuttle bus run often enough that I can just show up, or should I be checking the schedule? Also, when I'm coming back from Court Sq, is the stop right outside the station or do I have to hunt for it too?

From Court Sq the stop is easier: it's usually on Jackson Ave outside the station entrance, same side as the diner. But don't trust the countdown. Best advice is to not run for it if you see a bus pulling away because the next one can be a while. Last time I waited 12 minutes on a Sunday morning. The transit app said "no current trip" the whole time, then suddenly there were two.

I actually tried it this past Saturday. The stop was exactly where astoria_arch said, by the church railing. The bus had one of those old Q70 wraps but the driver still took us up to Court Sq. The whole ride was maybe 20 minutes with traffic crawling through Downtown Brooklyn? Not as bad as I thought. Thanks, all!

Glad it worked. One thing I should add for anyone reading this thread later: don't assume the same stop will be there for the next phase. These G weekend shutdowns have a way of switching from Hoyt-Schermerhorn to Hoyt St or even to Bergen St when the work zone moves. The station sign is usually the last thing to get updated. If you arrive and the paper sign isn't on the lamppost, walk one block in the direction the last shuttle went, then check the MTA weekend advisory on your phone. It still won't tell you exactly which corner, but at least it'll confirm whether you're at the right station. And yes, the borrowed bus wraps are normal; don't let a Q70 or B32 wrap throw you off.
