I moved to Crown Heights in the spring and I still haven't figured out the watch scene for Liberty games. I got a ticket once but Friday I don't want to drop that much, I just want to sit somewhere near the arena and actually hear the broadcast. Do bars around Barclays put the game on with sound, or do they treat it like background TV? I'd get there around 7:30. Any recs, or is this a 'go to a sports bar on Flatbush' situation? I'm not looking for a club, just a stool and a cold beer.

Liberty 8 p.m. at Barclays—anywhere nearby with full game audio, or is every spot on Atlantic a music bar?

Same boat. I tried a place on 5th Avenue last month, and they had the game on but the speakers were still playing a dinner playlist. Is that normal? I wasn't sure if I should ask them to switch the audio or just accept it. Hoping somebody here knows if there's a spot that does it by default.

Nah, you gotta check the right spots. Some places on Vanderbilt will put the speakers on if enough people ask, but don't bother with the big spots right on Atlantic. They're mostly music-first. I've watched at a bar off Washington and the sound was on for the second half. Get there early, ask the bartender, and don't sit near the DJ booth.

The situation around Barclays is genuinely inconsistent, so it helps to think in terms of audio first, screens second. In my experience, smaller neighborhood bars within three or four blocks of the arena are more reliable than the bigger places on Atlantic that are built for pregame cocktails. A few things I've learned doing this for Knicks, Nets, and Liberty games:
Liberty games don't always get the default audio treatment the Knicks or Yankees get, so the phrasing of your question matters. Asking for 'the game' can get you a screen with no sound. Asking for 'broadcast audio' at least tells them you actually want to pay attention.

Thanks rent_stab_ric, that 'sound on not just screens' line is good. I honestly figured every sports bar was the same, so I wouldn't have thought to call ahead. @newyork_newbie_n, which place on 5th was it so I know to skip it? I'm going to try one of the Vanderbilt spots tonight and will report back.

It was more of a cocktail place with TVs than a real sports bar, so my fault for assuming. They had the game up, but the speakers were on a playlist all night. I'll use that phone script tonight too. It does feel like if this were a Knicks game they'd have audio by default, but Liberty games get the 'we can turn it up if enough people complain' treatment sometimes.

Facts. Liberty still gets second-screen treatment unless it's a finals game. Friday might be different because the neighborhood is going to show out. If you're going alone, sit at the rail and tip the bartender early. They're the one who controls the audio box. Also, the closer you are to Barclays after doors open, the more the bars get mobbed with pre-game people, so maybe walk east a little.

One more caveat: game audio in a bar can turn into a mess if three TVs are on different feeds. When you call, ask if the main projector or room speakers are dedicated to the Liberty game. If the bartender says something like 'we'll have it on most TVs,' that's a soft no on audio. Also keep an eye on delay. A lot of places now stream off an app or a cable login that runs behind the broadcast, so you'll hear the crowd outside Barclays cheer a basket before your screen shows it. Not a dealbreaker, but if you're the type who texts friends during the game, you might get spoiled. I've made the mistake of assuming a spot near the arena would have the full setup. One Friday last season I showed up at a place on Flatbush that had four screens on the game and still had a DJ mix over it. I asked twice, and the second bartender finally told me the manager doesn't switch the house speakers during dinner service. So now I call and ask specifically about the room speakers. If you arrive at 7:30 and the pregame isn't on the screen yet, politely say you came specifically for the game and ask if they can put it on before tipoff. Bartenders usually appreciate knowing early instead of getting six people asking at 8:05. And if you're solo, don't camp a four-top on a Friday. A bar seat is easier to get and a lot easier to hear from.

All of this is like the stoop pumpkin lifecycle—by the time you find the right one, it's already changing. Sort of related: When do stoop pumpkins actually get thrown out? Ours is going soft When do stoop pumpkins actually get thrown out? Ours is going soft. But for the game, just get there early and ask for sound. Let us know if you find a spot, firstbodega. |
