Hey all—new here. Took the M15-SBS from 2 Av/34 St to 1 Av/63 St yesterday. I saw the gray OMNY readers on the silver poles right by the back doors, so I tapped my phone before stepping on. Then I noticed people walking straight through the middle/rear doors without tapping and some holding blue paper receipts from a machine on the sidewalk. Did I just pay twice by tapping if I was supposed to buy a receipt first? Nobody checked, but I don’t want one of those inspector surprise moments. I thought SBS meant you always pay at the door? Slightly confused—please explain like I’m new.

M15 SBS all-door boarding: paper receipt or OMNY door tap?

Welcome! You didn’t necessarily pay twice—on the M15 SBS, the OMNY door readers are your proof of payment if you tap with a phone or card right at the door. The sidewalk machines are the old MetroCard-era readers that still print the blue receipt for people not using OMNY. If you already tapped at the door, you’re covered!! It’s one ride, not two. The real trick is the 34 St island stop: the OMNY pole on the south end faces the bus shelter, not the crosswalk, so a lot of people miss it and then panic. Have you tried boarding at the 42 St island in the evening? The machines there are paper-out half the time!

I had the same confusion on the Q44 SBS last week. I bought the paper receipt because I was scared, then a lady told me I could have just tapped the pole. Do fare inspectors accept the phone tap screen or do they ask you to tap their reader? Also, if you have a transfer to the M15, do you need a new receipt?

Thanks, Stan! That makes me feel less dumb. So the people walking past me weren’t necessarily fare-beaters, they may have already tapped? I guess I’m still not sure how the inspectors know my OMNY tap happened at that stop and not ten minutes earlier? Do they have a reader that shows the last tap location? I haven’t tried the 42 St island yet, but I’m going back tomorrow. If the paper machine is out, tapping the door reader still works for a transfer to the M86 later, right?

Exactly! The OMNY reader logs the tap with a timestamp and location code tied to that bus, so when fare enforcement walks through with their handheld device, they can see your card or phone was validated on that bus at that boarding stop. You don’t need paper if you’re all-OMNY. For transfers, the normal two-hour OMNY transfer window applies, just like a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard. The old blue SBS receipt is basically only for MetroCard users who dip at the curb machine. The best part of M15 SBS is that you can board through the rear doors with a stroller and just tap the pole! Have you tried the 50 St stop northbound? The inspector pair loves to post up right after the turn!

Okay that helps. So if I already used my unlimited MetroCard on the Q44 and then get on the M15 SBS, I don’t have to dip again at the curb? Because I thought SBS required the receipt even with an unlimited card. I saw a guy argue with inspectors at Flushing last month—he had no receipt but kept saying he had an unlimited card. They did not look moved.

Not legal advice, but on M15 SBS with an unlimited MetroCard, you’re supposed to dip at the curbside machine to get the SBS receipt before boarding. The door OMNY reader is a separate OMNY payment, not a MetroCard reader. If you board without tapping or dipping, inspectors can issue a summons even if you flash an unlimited card. It stinks, but that’s SBS proof-of-payment logic. Speaking of being stuck after a game: there was a thread about Liberty road game at 7, Knicks preseason at 7:30 — which Manhattan bar keeps Liberty audio? Liberty road game at 7, Knicks preseason at 7:30 — which Manhattan bar keeps Liberty audio? that may help if you’re doing the M15-to-Midtown bar transfer.

Ah okay, so the unlimited MetroCard thing is different from OMNY. That explains why the receipt machines are still around. I think I’ll just keep using OMNY on the M15 and skip the sidewalk machine—unless I need a paper trail. FYI that bar audio thread is exactly my next problem, so thanks. Does the 50 St inspector thing happen mid-afternoon or only rush hour?

Mid-afternoon they seem to hit the 50 St and 96 St stops in pairs, usually right after boarding the northbound bus, but I’ve also seen them at 1 Av/72 St. They board through the front and announce 'fare inspection, everyone have your proof ready.' If you tapped the OMNY door reader, they’ll ask you to tap their handheld or show the credit card or phone. Important: if you use the same card for all OMNY taps, don’t switch to a different phone or card mid-transfer, because the transfer won’t link. Have you tapped a watch? I tried once and it logged as a different virtual card number—big mistake!!

Just tried the rear door tap on the M15 SBS yesterday and it showed 'GO' on the screen, so I guess I’m good. Then inspectors got on at 2 Av/42 St and scanned my phone—they said fine and moved on. It was less scary than I expected. I used my phone again for the M86 transfer and didn’t get charged a second time, at least I don’t think so. Does anyone know if the OMNY reader beeps differently for a transfer?

Thanks everyone. I did the same route today, tapped at the side pole near the back doors, and it felt way less weird. No inspectors, but I wasn’t nervous for once. The little receipt machines make sense now—they’re the MetroCard lane, basically. I’m keeping OMNY for SBS and saving paper. This board is great. |
