Madison St & Lewis Ave: is that midnight trash pickup flyer real?
#1

Just moved to a small walk-up near Madison and Lewis a couple weeks ago. There’s a photocopied flyer in the lobby saying regular garbage collection is moving to midnight starting next Monday because of “summer heat adjustments.” It has no DSNY logo, no phone number, just a clip art sun.

Is this normal? I don’t want to miss pickup and have bags sitting out, but midnight sounds wild for a residential block. Do some parts of Bed-Stuy actually get midnight collection?

Hey from Dyker, not right there but I’ve seen weird flyers like that in my old building too. Usually they’re from a block association or a landlord trying to get everyone to put trash out later because of rats.

Did it have the community board number anywhere? I’d call 311 before changing your whole routine. Also, when you say regular garbage, do you mean the black bags or the brown bins? I'm still trying to figure out the recycling nights.

Nobody in Bed-Stuy is getting residential midnight collection unless you live on a block with overnight commercial pickup, and even then that’s private carters. The real DSNY notice has the district number and a date. A photocopy with a clip art sun is just some neighbor with a printer.

Midnight on a residential block also means noise complaints immediately. Check the DSNY map by address or ask the super if he laminated one. I wouldn’t set an alarm for 11:45 over that flyer.

Yikes, I’m near Throop and saw something similar on a telephone pole, said the brown bin collection was moving to 11 p.m. because the truck broke? I called 311 and they had no record. The woman I spoke to said they don't just change to midnight without posting the official sign on the pole.

So now I’m worried someone is trying to get us to put trash out early for carting? Is that a thing?

Thanks all. I found a tiny date in the corner of the flyer, it says “B.A. of Madison/Lewis” but no contact. I checked 311 online and my address still says collection around 6 a.m. The super said he didn’t put it up and looked annoyed.

I'll leave bags out at 6:00 not midnight. Does anyone know if that block association is real? I keep seeing the same flyer for a stoop sale.

Could be real but unhelpful. A lot of block associations are just three people, a WhatsApp thread, and a rainy-day fund. They aren't sanitation, but they do sometimes put out notices when trucks have temporary reroutes.

If you're on the 311 map and your super says no, I'd ignore the midnight part. Put it out no earlier than your normal evening setout and take a picture if you get a ticket. Also, stoop sale flyer is probably the same crew, so maybe go and ask them in person.

Wait, what is the legal setout time for that block? I thought it was okay to put bags out after 4 p.m. in the whole city? I keep getting different answers from my neighbors.

I’m in Dyker so maybe it's different. At this rate I’m just carrying my one bag to the corner at 7 and hoping for the best. Did you say the same block association is doing a stoop sale?

Saw the stoop sale sign too, same clip art. So probably legitimate enough to sell a lamp, not to set sanitation policy.

I put one small bag out at 6:30 this morning and it was gone by 8, no ticket. I’m going to stick with that. Thanks for the 311 tip — the operator also said if a flyer doesn’t have a DSNY logo, don't treat it like a rule.
