Manhattan red-sauce joint that still does a proper veal parm and won't rush the table?

Parents coming in from Jersey next Saturday and my mother already pulled the 'nothing fancy, just a good plate of pasta and a booth' card. She means red sauce, chicken parm, garlic bread, the whole thing. They like to eat at 5:30 before the crowds and they don't want to deal with Brooklyn parking, so Manhattan only. Looking for a place that won't rush them out or make them wait standing at the bar. Not trying to spend tasting-menu money on a chicken cutlet. What's still good?

5:30 is the move honestly, you'll have the dining room to yourself. In my neighborhood, Trattoria Trecolori on 47th is solid for that old-school-without-being-tacky vibe. Their chicken parm is big enough to split. Only thing is the room isn't huge, so if your parents want a booth you might want to ask when you book. Nobody rushes you there.

YES to red sauce!! This is my favorite category. Have you tried John's of 12th Street? It's in the East Village, total old-school, wood-paneled, candles on the table. Their veal parm is still pounded thin and not buried in cheese, which is rare now. The baked clams are old-school too. It's super small and they don't seat incomplete parties, so get there at like 5 to 5:30 and you'll be fine. Does she like tripe? Not important, but they do it.

CobbleHill_C, if you want a safe bet in Manhattan for that exact brief, I'd put John's of 12th at the top, with a couple caveats. It's cash only — tell your parents before you go so they aren't doing the ATM shuffle on 1st Ave. It's small and it fills quickly even by 6pm, especially on a Saturday. They don't take reservations for small parties historically, so plan on arriving at 5 or 5:15 and getting a seat immediately. The room is loud but in that warm, family-run way. Speed of service is relaxed without being lazy; you won't see a check dropped until you ask.

If you need something a bit more buttoned-up or easier parking, I'd consider Patsy's Italian Restaurant on 56th — not Patsy's Pizzeria, different thing. The room is more formal, the staff is old-school professional, and they do veal parm respectably. It's a restaurant where parents from Jersey feel taken care of. But it's not cheap cheap, so check the vibe first. For absolutely zero rush and red sauce, I'd also mention Lil Frankie's if they can handle a little East Village noise.

I'm usually the one dragging people to Queens, but for Manhattan, blocks_and_lots is right about John's of 12th. The one thing I'd add is that the portion sizes are huge and they're happy to put extra bread on the table. If your parents are the type to order an appetizer and a pasta and then a main, they will absolutely over-order. I usually tell people to split the main and still end up with leftovers. Also, if they're not strict about Manhattan, Don Peppe by Jamaica Ave has the best baked clams/red sauce energy, but it's a drive and the room is loud. For an early Saturday, John's is the move.

Seconding the early bird recommendation. My in-laws do the same thing. One thing nobody mentioned: Carmine's is the one to avoid if you don't want a tourist trap. It's fine for big groups but not a booth, not quiet, and the food is all over the place. Your mom will be happy with John's of 12th.

I know you said Manhattan only, but if Jersey parking is the issue, Bamonte's in Williamsburg is closer off the BQE than half of Manhattan. They have a real parking lot, which is almost a unicorn. Old-school red sauce, waiters in jackets, and they don't rush. Just a thought if the tunnel traffic gets annoying. But if it's Manhattan, John's of 12th is the right call.

Thanks all. Sounds like John's of 12th is the front-runner. My mom will love the wood-paneled thing. Is it actually still cash only? That might be a dealbreaker for my dad who refuses to carry cash. He thinks Venmo is a bank. Might be the one time I lose the argument.

CobbleHill_C, yes, John's of 12th has been cash only every time I've gone, including last winter. They have an ATM inside, but it's the grungy kind with a fee. Better plan is to hit your bank earlier in the day. Your dad will survive. If cash truly is a dealbreaker, Patsy's on 56th definitely takes cards and has more structured reservations. But it leans more 'special occasion' and less 'booth with a bowl of spaghetti.'

Have you tried the baked clams at John's? Because if your mom is a clam person, order those before she even opens the menu. They don't do anything modern — just breadcrumbs, garlic, lemon, maybe a little oil. I think about them more than any veal parm in the city. Also ask for the table bread to be warmed, they toast it if you're nice about it.

lol the Venmo line got me. My dad's the same. Truth is at 5:30 on a Saturday you might be the only table with a booth before the dinner rush, so nobody's rushing anyway. Only place I'd add is Frank on 2nd Ave if you can't get into John's and don't want to wait. Not a booth-heavy spot, but the staff is chill and the pastas are good.

Just to slightly correct the record on Carmine's — it's not awful if you're with a huge family and want a platter, but it's definitely not the assignment here. For two or three people at 5:30, John's is more intimate. Also, if you end up further west, Osteria Morini is a different vibe but not red sauce. Skip it for this meal. I'd still put Patsy's as the backup if dad needs plastic.

Took my in-laws to John's on 12th a few weeks ago. They didn't rush us, waiter offered to split the veal parm onto two plates before we even asked, and my mother-in-law asked for extra sauce which came without a pause. Go at 5:15, order the clams, bring cash, done.
