Steam table plates at bodegas: who’s still piling the pernil high, and who’s skimping?
#1

Been noticing my usual steam table spot on 116th got stingy with the pernil. Same price, thinner slices, and the rice is dry half the time. I’m not trying to pay restaurant money for a sad scoop. Where are you all going for a bodega plate that still gives you enough for two meals? Extra points if the maduros are good.

I’m not above walking a few blocks if it’s worth it.

Oh man, this is my topic! You have to try Don Pedro’s on 110th and 3rd. The pernil is chopped to order, skin on, and they don’t count the maduros like they’re gold. Ask for extra mojo, it’s free. Have you tried their pollo guisado? It’s unreal! The sauce actually soaks into the rice instead of sitting on top.

Came in to say Don Pedro’s too. Only issue is the line after 12:30. If you can get there before noon it’s fine. EastHarlem_E, your 116th spot isn’t the one near the 6 station is it? Because I used to like that one but last couple times the rice was dry and they gave me two skinny pieces of pernil with a loud sigh.

#4

Yeah Gowanus_G, that’s the one. Dry rice and the pernil got thin. I’ll hit Don Pedro’s. ferryfanatic, is the mojo actually free if you ask? Some spots charge when I ask for a side, and I don’t like surprises at the register.

At Don Pedro’s? Yes! The older woman behind the counter will just pour some into the corner of the plate if you ask nice. I go twice a week. Also try the stewed chicken on Thursday, they do it with extra olives. And the plastic container is large enough to split into two lunches if you’re not greedy.

Thursday stewed chicken is the move. For the OP, if you’re ever further down in East Harlem, there’s a spot on 106th and Lex that does a decent ropa vieja plate. Not as cheap as Don Pedro’s but still reasonable. The maduros are hit or miss though.

#7

Good looks. I’m not trekking to 106th for hit or miss maduros. Sweet plantains are half the plate. If they can’t get those right, I’m out.

#8

For maduros specifically, the Dominican spot on 3rd Ave and 106th? Wait, maybe I’m thinking of 109th. They fry them extra dark so the edges get caramelized. If you get the roasted chicken plate they put two pieces plus a fried egg on top if you ask. Have you tried asking for a fried egg? It’s a game changer.

#9

Fried egg on rice and beans is always a power move. But then I’m paying extra and still need a nap before 2pm.

#10

HA! The nap is part of the meal. But on the real, the extra egg won’t break you. That’s still a full plate for cheap. Now I’m hungry and it’s not even lunch yet.

Alright, I’m convinced. Don Pedro’s tomorrow. I’ll report back if I remember. If you see a guy pouring mojo into the container at 11:45, mind your business.
