Tarrytown Lakes vs Croton Gorge for a quick no-car leg stretch?

Alright, got one of those weekends where I need to be outside but I don’t want to deal with a car or a whole production. I keep hearing people say just hop Metro-North to Tarrytown or Croton-Harmon and go walk around. For those who've done both: if you only had a few hours, which is the better leg-stretch—Tarrytown Lakes or Croton Gorge? I don’t need a bucket-list hike, just somewhere to walk, get some air, maybe grab a coffee after. Is one more of a sidewalk slog than a trail? Also, how far is the actual walk from the platform?

EastHarlem_E, both are solid, but they’re different animals. I’ve done each as a no-car half day. From Tarrytown station, Tarrytown Lakes is an easy walk—up the hill on Neperan Road, mostly sidewalk but not unpleasant. The loop around the lakes is maybe a mile and change and there are side paths; it’s more local park than deep woods. The payoff is that downtown Tarrytown is right there for coffee/lunch afterward, so the walk back is downhill and convenient.

Croton Gorge is more dramatic but a little more work from the train. From Croton-Harmon, you can walk along the Old Croton Aqueduct down toward the dam, but there are sections where you’re on road shoulders and it’s not as signposted as you’d hope. The view at the base of the dam and the trailhead into the park are worth it.

If you want nature with less sidewalk, I’d do Croton Gorge; if you want an easy loop and a more built-in food stop, Tarrytown Lakes wins. One caveat: Metro-North weekend track work can turn a quick ride into a wait, so check the schedule before you commit.

Seconding what oldyork_otis said. I did the Tarrytown version last fall and it's fine but definitely more 'park with a lake' than hike. I grabbed a coffee after and it was the best part lol. Croton Gorge is on my list. Is the aqueduct path from Croton-Harmon actually flat like they say, or one of those 'flat but the shoulder sucks' situations?

Appreciate the breakdown. I’m probably leaning Tarrytown this weekend since I’m too lazy to gamble on road shoulders, and the coffee-after part is a plus. Flatbush_Fi, let me know if you do Croton Gorge before I do—curious if that aqueduct section is chill or if I should just suck it up and ride the extra stop to Peekskill.
