Trying to lock down an anniversary dinner next Tuesday. I know Tuesday is easier than Friday/Saturday, but we've still had some spots rush us out or crank the music so you can't hear each other. We're not looking for a three-hour tasting thing, just a solid sit-down with good food, a decent wine list, maybe 90 minutes to two hours. Manhattan or north/west Brooklyn works. We're coming from Gowanus, so not trying to go up to like Riverdale.
Cuisine-wise: French, Italian, new American, maybe Mediterranean. No sushi. Budget mid-range — not Per Se money, but not counter service. What's been working lately?

Honestly the 'can't hear each other' thing kills me. Had a date at a place in Williamsburg last month that felt like a DJ set.
For a Tuesday, I'd look at Fausto near Grand Army. Bar room can be lively but the dining room earlyish is pretty mellow, and the wine list is underrated. Cafe Spaghetti in Carroll Gardens is also a good move if you like Italian; sit out back if the weather holds. Both are manageable from Gowanus and don't pretend you're at a club.
If you want Manhattan, maybe Terre? Haven't been in a sec.

Gowanus_G, if you're aiming for a Tuesday, you've already dodged a lot of the weekend crush. I'd add Locanda Verde in Tribeca for a comfortable early-ish table; it can get buzzy around 7:30, but 6:00-6:30 is relatively calm and they don't shove you out the door. Celestine in Dumbo is a maybe — great view, but request the quiet corner and be ready to pay extra for the postcard factor. If you want something closer, Rucola in Boerum Hill is dark, small, and talkable, though the Northern Italian-leaning menu won't be for everyone.
I'd avoid the obvious big-deal bistros on a Tuesday unless you're willing to sit late or early. The rushed feeling usually comes from places overbooking the first turn.
Also, if you're squeezing this around a weird work schedule, someone asked about a similar timing crunch in the older thread Working a 6 a.m. bakery counter shift before my 9–5 — am I nuts? Working a 6 a.m. bakery counter shift before my 9–5 — am I nuts? — the general takeaway there was that off-peak shifts make quiet, early dinners way more doable.

Oh this is great timing. We just tried Cafe Spaghetti after a friend rec and it was lovely! We sat at the bar though, so can't really speak to table noise. Quick question: for an anniversary, do you tell them ahead or is that too much? I always feel weird about it.
Also is Fausto hard to get on a Tuesday? We're still figuring out reservation windows in the city.

Tell them, definitely. Don't make it a whole thing, just put 'anniversary' in the reservation notes. Worst case they ignore it, best case you get a better table or a scoop of sorbet.
+1 to Fausto. Drinks are sneaky good. If you're willing to go East Village, Hearth has been reliable for a grown-up weeknight dinner and never feels like a club. Book 6:30/7.
