Walk-in table for 8 on a Thursday—what's actually holding in the East Village?
#1

Alright, Thursday night birthday thing, 8 people. We didn’t do the reservation thing because half the group flakes, but now they’re actually showing. Looking for a walk-in around 7:30, East Village / LES preferred. Need a real table, not a counter. One vegetarian, one GF who can do pasta if there’s an option, and one guy who won’t eat anything green unless it’s fried. Not trying to stand outside with a pager or drop a stupid amount. Red-sauce Italian is the default. What’s currently taking 8 without making you feel like a fire hazard?

Oh I just tried that corner spot on Avenue B near 6th—maybe Casa something? We went early, like just before 6, and it was fine but two people. Do these places even do GF pasta if you ask? I forgot to look. Thursday might be worse because of the weekend creep. Are you trying to stay below 14th or is Kips Bay okay? I always see big tables outside that place on 2nd Ave near 23rd but maybe too far.

For eight on a Thursday, I’d honestly skip the stretch of East 12th/13th between Second and Third unless you plan to send someone at 4:45 to hold down an outside table. The walk-in window there has collapsed since everyone decided 7:30 is still “early.” What has worked for me with a group that size:

  • Call around 5:15 and ask if they can put you on the back list, not a reservation. Some places will tell you to come before 6:15 if you want a six-top or an eight-top pushed together.
  • Try the red-sauce spot on East 4th between Second and Bowery—they mostly do larger tables, the kitchen is used to GF modifications (they have a chickpea pasta but it sells out), and they don’t hustle you out if the table lingers over another bottle of wine.
  • Another option is an old-school place on Avenue C near 5th, maybe less polished, but they do a solid penne arrabbiata and half carafes.

Caveat: Thursday after 9 gets loud, and an 8-top will add to that. If you want white tablecloth, this isn’t it. If you want to sit and be treated like a regular, it works. Bring the vegetarian, skip the gluten-free bread there—it's not worth it.

Yep. That East 4th one is okay but last time they tried to seat us by the kitchen and my chair got clipped every two minutes. Food was right, though. For gluten-free pasta, I don’t trust most red-sauce joints; half of them boil it in the same water. If your friend is actually sensitive, maybe steer toward a place that does rice noodles or a veggie-forward spot. But if she’s just avoiding gluten, fine.

Wait is this the same thing as last-minute big group? I’ve been too nervous to try walking in with more than four. Do you just call or send one person ahead? What do you say? I tried a place in the West Village once and the host looked at me like I asked for a private room. We ended up at a diner. So I’m following this for tips. Also, OP, if you end up at the Avenue C place, report back—I live nearby-ish and have seen it but never gone in.

Honestly the move for 8 is somewhere slightly boring. Pizza-Italian hybrid? A place with a back room and an early crowd. Thursday 7:30 is not terrible if everyone is there by 7:20. If you roll in at 7:50 and ask for 8, that's when the host starts lying to your face. astoria_arch is right about calling ahead, but don't overdo it—some places treat that as a reservation and then deny it. I'd also look at the old Jewish dairy spots if the GF person can do eggs, but that's not red sauce.

Second the call-ahead move but keep it low key. 'Hey, just checking if you can do a walk-in for 8 around 7:30?' not 'I need to book a table.' If they hesitate, ask what time they'd take 8. Also, don't sleep on the Chinese-Italian spots on Mulberry—some of them have big round tables in the back, and they're used to mixed groups. Not as cute, but they'll feed you.

Appreciate all this. We’re going to try the East 4th spot. I’ll have my GF friend call before and make sure they can do a non-cross-contaminated pan. Noise is fine, it’s a birthday.

Quick sidebar since a couple people here seem like they’re near 181st: that Fifth-floor walk-up off 181st: queen mattress and a solid dresser up two tight turns? discussion has its own thread: Fifth-floor walk-up off 181st: queen mattress and a solid dresser up two tight turns?. Back to food—anyone got a fallback if they tell us no? Something within a ten-minute walk of 14th St, not a diner.

Oh nice! I hope it works. For fallback, there's a spot on First Ave near 9th that does big tables in the back, not Italian but lots of vegetable stuff and a separate GF menu. It gets quieter on Thursdays. Also now I finally know to call at 5:15 and not use the word reservation. Thanks astoria_arch. Let us know how the chickpea pasta thing goes.

Good luck. One more thing: if you do end up at the East 4th spot and the back room is full, don't accept the two-top by the front door—it's basically a waiting area with silverware. Ask if the garden room is open or if they can put you at the long table left of the bar. And no, the gluten-free bread never gets better.

For the fallback, the First Ave place manhattan_midge mentioned is reasonable; just know the portions run small, so if you've got big eaters, order about one and a half per person. They do a separate GF menu, but the kitchen is slower with substitutions after eight.

If half the group flakes again, you can drop to four and sit at the bar almost anywhere. But for eight, arriving as an actual group at 7:20 makes the host's life easier and yours shorter. Also, don't send one person to 'hold a table' and then text six people to roll in ten minutes later; most of these smaller places will give it away if the whole party isn't there within a few minutes.
