Where’s a Friday table for 6 below 23rd that won’t rush us out in 90 minutes?
#1

Trying to book a birthday dinner for six in a couple weeks. Everywhere I look below 23rd either takes no reservations, only has two-tops, or wants a tasting menu with a hard 90-minute seat. We’re not expecting to camp for four hours, just a normal meal. Any spots where a group can actually sit, hear each other, and not get the bum’s rush? Prefer below 23rd, not a big scene, but decent food is non-negotiable.

I feel this. West Village is a nightmare for that group size. Cafe Mogador on St Marks can do a six if you call; it gets loud but they won’t hover. Lil’ Frankie’s on First Ave is another one—go early and they basically leave you alone. Food’s solid, not fancy.

Oh! If you’re open to LES, have you tried Kiki’s on Division? They give you that big table and nobody rushes you, but the wait can be insane! For a reservation, Tyger in Nolita might hold a table for six? The coconut prawns hmm, maybe not if you want low-key! Wait—have you tried San Sabino? I know it’s a little scene-y, but their crudo and pastas are so good! They might not do six though!

Mogador is a solid call, CarnegieHill_C. Kiki’s is not a hidden spot anymore, but the food hits. For six, Rubirosa used to take a phone res, but now it’s basically a pizza mob. If you don’t mind early, Frank on 2nd Ave can do family-style and they don’t rush.

Cafe Mogador was chaos when I did brunch there once, but maybe dinner’s different. Frank’s a thought. The app-only waitlists are killing me though—I just want a person to tell me yes or no.

Have you tried Fiaschetteria Pistoia? It’s tiny, so probably not six! But they’re very 'sit and stay' if you can squeeze. L’Artusi takes reservations, but the bar room gets loud. Oh! Potluck Club in Chinatown is group-friendly if you can grab a slot! The sticky rice and scallion noodles are !!! Maybe too loud? Uncle Lou is the move for Cantonese round tables—they give you space and don’t hover.

Uncle Lou is a great call. Did a group of seven there last winter and nobody looked at their watch once. Garlic pea shoots, snow pea leaves whatever they’re calling them that night, and the roast pork. You need to order like family style. Shellfish allergy might be an issue if soy/oyster cross-contact.

#8

Seconding Uncle Lou. They take cards now, last I checked. If you want quieter Italian, Morandi on Waverly can do six but it can feel a little sceney. Via Carota won’t happen. Buvette no. What about Il Posto Accanto? Wait I think it’s gone.

#9

Uncle Lou looks right for price and vibe, but one of us has a shellfish allergy and Cantonese kitchens scare me for that. Does that kill it? Non-seafood big table maybe safer. Balthazar would work but feels like a mall food hall now.

#10

Oh no, a shellfish allergy at Cantonese is hard! Oyster sauce is in everything! What about Supper on 2nd St? They have that back room and take reservations for six! It’s old-school, not quiet but not club-level. Also Emmett’s on Grove for Chicago thin, they can squeeze small groups, but maybe less birthday energy.

Supper is a good birthday call. Rear dining room, pastas, no one’s trying to flip it fast. Crispo on 14th also handles six in the back and it’s not a zoo, though I think it skews older. If you’re willing to go slightly above 23rd, Elio’s is old-school and they’ll treat you right.

If it’s a birthday and you don’t want precious, Supper all day. Or Monte’s in the Village for red sauce and a group table. Let us know where you land, EastHarlem_E.
