First post here. I promised a visiting friend the 'chill NYC rooftop' experience this Friday, but the only spot I know in LIC had a line at 7, nowhere to sit, and a drink that cost more than my lunch. We're not looking for bottle service or a DJ, just somewhere in Astoria/LIC with open air, decent drinks, and a spot to sit without getting elbowed. Does that still exist? Dive bar with a backyard is fine too. I just don't want to drag her around all evening hunting for a table.

Chill rooftop in LIC before 8 is mostly a myth now, especially Friday. If you want that, go to The Bonnie's upper deck early—not exactly rooftop but it has air and plants. Gets mobbed by 7:30. If you can deal with no view, Diamond Dogs on 31st Ave has a backyard that's dead low-key, good drinks, no bouncer. No velvet rope, just a gate and some string lights. I'd do that over any glass box in LIC.

Since you said open-air and low-key, I'd separate two things: a real rooftop and a place with outdoor space. Most true rooftops in LIC belong to hotels or big apartment buildings, and they run on the same playbook: line at the door, limited seating, pricey cocktails. The Boro Hotel rooftop has the best view and is relatively relaxed before 6:30, but on a Friday it trends toward dates and out-of-town guests. If you want a table, arrive before 6. The Bonnie in Astoria is a good compromise: the upstairs is more of a covered terrace than a rooftop, service is fast, and there are enough seats early. Astoria's outdoor scene is better if you let go of elevation. Diamond Dogs has a narrow backyard that never feels like a scene, and the bartenders actually remember regulars. Anable Basin is on the water with an unbeatable sunset view of the Queensboro Bridge and Manhattan. It's not a rooftop, but you can sit by the railing, order at the counter, and stay a while. My usual Friday move is Anable Basin around 6:15 for a table by the water, then walk over to Dutch Kills for a cocktail if the first place turns into a private event. One caveat: in summer, a lot of outdoor bars accept buyouts for weddings and corporate happy hours. Check their Instagram before you cross the neighborhood.

Are any of these by the M/R or at least not a full hike from Maspeth? I moved here not long ago and still get lost in LIC. I tried a spot near Dutch Kills last weekend, maybe one of those big rooftops, and the line was around the corner. I didn't even know if it was a bar or a club. If Anable Basin has a table by the water, that sounds more my speed.

Anable Basin is the right call for a visiting friend. It's not fancy but the view is better than half the rooftops charging triple. Also if you want outdoor but no line, Bohemian Hall beer garden around 5:30 is still manageable. Tables are long benches so you might share, but it's old-school Astoria. Diamond Dogs backyard is tiny, so don't roll up with six people unless you want to stand.

Thanks, this is super helpful. My friend actually asked if we could do 'water plus skyline,' so Anable Basin sounds perfect. Do they have actual food or is it just bar snacks? Also Diamond Dogs—do they have heat lamps if it cools down? We're only bringing two of us, so a small backyard is fine.

Anable Basin usually has a short food menu—think burgers, fish and chips, sometimes a seasonal salad—but the kitchen isn't open super late. If you get there around 6 or 6:30, you'll be fine. It's counter service, so you order at the bar and bring the food to your table, which keeps things casual. Diamond Dogs does have a few heat lamps in the backyard, but they only do so much when the temperature drops below 60. They also have good bar food, but again, it's not a full kitchen all night. For two people, sitting at the bar inside and stepping out to the backyard between rounds works well. One thing to note about Anable Basin: it's partly exposed, so check the wind. On a breezy evening, the water side gets cold fast even in the summer. I'd bring a layer.

Don't sleep on the walk from Anable Basin to the 7 train after dark; it's not bad but it's quiet. I'd go from Anable to Diamond Dogs if you want a second spot with two different vibes. Or just stay put. The heat lamps at DD do work if you get the seat right under them, otherwise you're fighting for it.

I tried Anable Basin on Friday and it was closed for a private thing. The woman at the gate said they sometimes buy out the whole space in summer. Is that normal? I ended up at a random bar underneath the bridge and it was just okay. I'd like to try again on a weeknight when it's maybe quieter.

Private buyouts are common at Anable Basin in June and September especially. Always check their story before you head over, or call; they usually post it. Try a Tuesday or Wednesday around sunset. Same view, half the people, no gate check. Or hit LIC Bar on Vernon if you get turned away again—old-school, no outdoor view but no line.

Quick update: we ended up at Diamond Dogs and it was exactly the vibe. Got a little table in the back, heat lamp on one side, and the bartender didn't act like we were taking up space. My friend loved it. We never made it to Anable Basin but I'm going back with my roommate on a weeknight. Any other spot with that same tiny-backyard, no-hostage situation?

Glad that worked. If you want that same tiny-backyard energy, the next places to try are the back garden at Sweet Afton on 30th Ave and the side yard at Judy & Punch. Sweet Afton can get crowded inside, but the garden is calmer early. Judy & Punch has a more bar-forward crowd and weekends get loud. For water views without the rooftop markup, the picnic tables outside LIC Bar are another decent fallback, though it's more sidewalk than backyard. My general rule: in Astoria, look for the places with a gate in the back, not a staircase to a roof. Rooftops in LIC are for people taking photos; backyards are for people who actually want to stay.
