Who's actually still frying after 1am near the Jefferson L stop?
#1

Okay this is my hill and I'm ready to be corrected! I keep striking out trying to find a real plate of food—not a sad bag of chips—after leaving shows around the Jefferson L stop. I know the taco truck on Wyckoff sometimes posts up by the old Key Food, but last two Saturdays they were gone by 12:15. The bodega on Irving was my savior for a chopped cheese, but they pulled the grill at 11 on the dot.

Is there ANY dive bar or late-night kitchen within a ten-minute walk that's actually still putting out hot food after 1am? I'm talking fries from a basket, maybe a smashburger, even a decent Cuban if you have one. I don't care if the bar is loud, cash-only, or the guy wants me to order at the pass. I just want the food.

Have you tried the place that pops up on the corner of Wyckoff and Linden? They had a neon 'LATE NITE' sign last fall but I haven't seen it on. Tell me it's real and not a seasonal mirage.

The neon sign place is real, but it's weird. They're not a truck—it's a little window behind a bar, and they don't always turn the sign on. If you're facing the shut-down storefront, walk around the side door. Fries are decent, not life-changing. The cook only comes out after 11:30, so before that it's just bags of chips. If you're closer to Halsey, the Chinese takeout on Cornelia is better, but they stop delivery at 12:45 and you'll have to pick up. Not that helpful after 1am.

Wait, this is so helpful. I'm in Dyker but I've been going to shows at Knockdown Center and usually end up with a cold empanada from a cart. Does the window place have seating, or is it grab and go? Also, do they make you buy a drink just to use the bathroom before you can even order? I never know the bar rules around there.

Gowanus_G, thank you! The side door is the trick. I saw that neon sign from across the street last fall and thought I was imagining it. DykerNewbie, the cold empanada cart is not the move after midnight. No seating from what I remember, but you can usually stand near the pinball machine if the back patio is closed.

Have you tried the green chile burger? I think there was a hand-drawn menu by the door in the dark, but I couldn't tell if it was actually green chile or just jalapeños. Gowanus_G, is it a real flat-top or a panini press situation?

#5

It's a flat-top behind the bar, but the cook only works it when he's in the mood. Greenpoint_guy, green chile burger is good if you want a burger at 1am; it's not green chile like a New Mexico thing, more like chopped jalapeño and maybe a little salsa. DykerNewbie, you do generally need to buy a drink to use the bathroom, but a can of Modelo or a soda will get you there. If you're trekking back to Dyker after Knockdown Center, I'd eat before you leave Bushwick though.

Just tried the window last night! I asked for the burger medium-well and they didn't even blink. Got it in maybe ten minutes, but the bar was so packed I had to eat standing by the pinball machine. Fries were good, extra crispy. Is that back area a patio or just a smoke spot? Also, do they have any veggie option? My friend's coming next week and won't do beef.

Not to derail, but there's a thread called 'M60 SBS to LGA: are rear-door OMNY readers the real deal or just a game of chance?'—M60 SBS to LGA: are rear-door OMNY readers the real deal or just a game of chance?—that has the same 'is the thing real or just a game of chance' energy. Anyway, DykerNewbie, the smoke area is technically a patio, but only if the bouncer knows you. Ask for extra napkins.

Gowanus_G, pepperoncini grilled cheese at 1:30 AM is exactly the data I needed. And DykerNewbie, the smoke area is basically a patio if the bartender's in a good mood. Get the extra napkins; those fries leak oil through the basket.

Now I have to ask: fried mozzarella. Saw it on the chalkboard and was too scared to try after midnight. Is it actual mozzarella sticks or just a frozen brick that turns into a lava hot mess?

#9

Okay, next up fried mozzarella. I still can't believe this place is behind the bar. I walked past it twice because the neon sign was off but the side door was open. Do they post anywhere if the kitchen is running? What's the latest they'll actually serve? I'm trying to figure out if I can make it after a 12:30 set without sprinting from the venue.

The kitchen usually cuts it off around 2, but if the bartender likes you, they'll drop a basket of fries after. The chalkboard on the side door is more reliable than any app. Greenpoint_guy, fried mozzarella is just frozen Sysco, but it hits. Don't get the meatball hero, though. That's microwaved.

#11

Gowanus_G, you just saved me from a microwaved meatball hero—thank you. I was literally going to try it tonight. Frozen mozzarella after midnight has a time and a place, and that place is a sticky bar rail.

DykerNewbie, if you go after a 12:30 set, order at the pass before 2:05 and don't let the bouncer tell you the kitchen's closed. He has no idea. Ask for the guy in the green bandana.

This is the most useful thread I've ever read. I took the advice and ordered the mozzarella sticks right at 2:03. The cook gave me a free side of marinara because I said I was new. Totally worth the trip. Does the green bandana guy have a name, or do I just say 'the green bandana guy'? Also, next time can someone show me how to get to the back patio without looking lost?
