Window AC drip wars: do I knock on the upstairs door or just rig my own fix?
#1

Been in this building long enough to know summer means two things: the bodega fans sell out and every window AC starts peeing on the one below it. But this year the upstairs unit is dripping straight onto my metal sleeve, not the sidewalk. It’s a steady plink-plink from about 10 p.m. until they finally shut it off.

I shoved a folded chunk of foam under the back corner to tilt mine the right way, and it still sounds like a faucet. Is the move to go knock on their door, ask the super to check their pitch, or just rig a piece of rubber mat on top of my sleeve? I don’t wanna be the guy who starts a whole AC drip war, but I’m also not trying to sleep with a metronome on my windowsill.

EastHarlem_E sorry you’re dealing with that—this is my new fear. Wait, they’re supposed to tilt outside? I just put mine in level because the bracket looked level and now I’m questioning every choice.

I’m new to this whole window AC thing—grew up with central air—and last night I thought I heard water kind of gurgling near the back. Is that condensation pooling? If I tip it too much do I risk it falling out? Also, would a drip pad or something underneath help, or is that just for inside? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I’m on a third floor and don’t want to be the upstairs neighbor you’re describing.

DykerNewbie, no—level is bad. You want a slight tilt outside, but if you overdo it, the unit can vibrate and water can pool in the wrong corner. Get a cheap level, put it on the indoor ledge, and lower the outside side maybe half a bubble. That’s usually enough.

EastHarlem_E, don’t just put rubber mat on top of your sleeve. Water will find a route around it or sit there and rust things. If the upstairs unit is dripping onto your sleeve, that’s their pitch or clogged drain hole. Knock and be chill about it. Ask if they can shim the front feet a little or clear the drain hole. If they won’t, then super. I use a plastic drip tray under mine, but that fixes your own drips, not theirs.

Flatbush_Fi is right about the pitch, but people always skip the drain hole! The little stamped hole on the bottom or back gets packed with pollen, dust, and dead gnats. Then the water rides up and dumps at the front corners. Clean it with a pipe cleaner or a toothpick—don’t use a metal pick, you’ll scratch the pan and make rust worse!

EastHarlem_E, if your neighbor won’t fix it, try a small piece of closed-cell foam zip-tied right under the drip point. Won’t stop rust long-term, but it kills the metronome noise instantly. Have you tried those U-shaped window units with the slinger fan? They spray condensate onto the coil and basically evaporate it! Different fix, but if you ever replace yours it solves half this nonsense. Also check whether the drip is coming from the condensate hole or the sleeve flashing—two totally different problems!
