Astoria birthday dinner for 6: vegan sister, wheelchair user, and a baby — where can we actually sit?

Looking for a place for a small birthday dinner next month—six of us, Saturday at 6:30/7. The group is a little specific, so my usual Astoria picks won't work: my father uses a manual wheelchair, my sister is vegan, and my daughter is 8 months old and will be in a stroller if we can't get a table with space for a high chair. Ideally Astoria/LIC/Sunnyside, not Manhattan if we can avoid it.

The main thing is that it still has to feel like a birthday dinner, not a diner or a tavern with sports on every screen. Noise matters: my father has hearing aids and my baby will be asleep by the end of the meal. Step-free entry and an accessible restroom are non-negotiable.

I usually send people to Taverna Kyclades or Bahari for a Greek birthday, but the wait and the small restrooms make me nervous with a wheelchair. We did Aliada a few years ago and I remember it being manageable, but the layout past the bar was tight and the back room had a weird step up. Maybe they've changed the setup?

I was considering Maiella in LIC. I know the room is nice and it feels like an occasion, but I can't remember if the entrance is level or if there are a couple of steps near the bar. Blend on the Water came up too, but that might be more of a scene than a quiet family dinner.

Anybody done a similar mix? I want my sister to have a real vegan option, not just a salad with the cheese removed, and I don't want my dad stuck at the far end of the room behind a planter because the accessible table is the worst table in the house.

Oh man, this is almost exactly my group for my mom's birthday in October, except it's a walker instead of a wheelchair and no baby. I'm new to this part of Astoria, so I don't have a perfect answer, but we tried The Bonnie for brunch with a stroller and it was so tight between tables. The host was really nice, but the restroom is down a small step, I think? Maybe not.

Have you looked at Mars? I see people with strollers outside all the time, but I've only been late and it was loud. Food was better than I expected for bar food, but probably not birthday-special. Sorry, I know that's not helpful. If you find something, please update—I'll be stealing the answer for my mom.

astoria_arch, I think you're overthinking the vegan part. Most places in Astoria will swap stuff if you call, but the wheelchair/stroller combo is the real filter. Maiella is probably your best bet in LIC. I went with a co-worker who uses a chair and they put us at a table near the front with plenty of room—she said the bathroom was actually usable, which is rare. Entrance was level from the street as far as I remember, but there might be a lip at the side door. Call and ask for the front room.

For vegan, their pastas can be done without cheese, and there's usually an eggplant thing. I wouldn't call it a vegan destination, but it won't be a sad side plate. I wouldn't do Blend for this—too much going on and the music gets up there. DykerNewbie, skip Mars for a hearing-aid dad, trust me.

Thanks, both. EastHarlem_E, I called Maiella this afternoon and confirmed the side entrance is level and they do have an accessible restroom, but they warned me the front room books out first and the rest of the dining room gets tight after 7. We went ahead and booked for 5:45. Not ideal for a birthday dinner, but with a baby and a wheelchair I'd rather be early than have my dad trapped in the bar.

DykerNewbie, I think you're right about The Bonnie—I've had that same issue with the step by the restroom. Mars is out; the second room is just too loud once the DJ starts or the speakers turn up.

I'm sending my sister the Maiella menu now. If the vegan options are too thin, the fallback is Jora in LIC, which usually has clear vegan labels and the room is calmer, but it's not as polished for a birthday. Will report back after Saturday.
