East Side bar kitchens shutting at 10 — where's still serving a real plate after 11?
#1

Seems like every old man bar on the east side either cut the kitchen back to 10 or dropped the menu to bar snacks. I’m not trying to end every night at a diner. I want a stool, a beer, and an actual plate of food after 11—burger, shepherd's pie, roasted chicken, anything that isn't just a bag of chips.

I’m in Yorkville but willing to walk down 1st/2nd if the spot is right. Not looking for a scene, no bottle service, don't need a rooftop. Just a real late kitchen where they don’t act like you’re nuts for ordering food at 11:30.

Who’s still doing it?

Woodhaven_W, the late kitchen on the east side has definitely shrunk. A lot of the old places kept a cook around because they had a regular dinner crowd, but now most of them treat the kitchen as a happy-hour amenity and close it when the after-work rush thins out. The places that stay open late tend to keep the menu small and the hours inconsistent, so you have to check before you sit down.

From recent memory:

  • The Red Door on 2nd around 76th still does a late menu Thursday–Saturday. Burger is fine, but don't bother with the nachos unless you like cold pickled jalapeños on everything.
  • O’Brien’s on 2nd near 81st is more dependable. Cash only, bar out front, two booths in the back. Kitchen usually runs to midnight on weeknights and a little later on Friday/Saturday, but call ahead if it's a holiday or a big game night.
  • The Houndstooth on 1st near 88th keeps a tiny fryer going later than most. Not a full dinner, but the fried chicken sandwich is better than it has any right to be.

Caveat: none of these are consistent on Sundays. Sunday after 9 p.m. can be a wasteland. Also, several places have a late menu posted on the door that doesn’t match what the kitchen is actually willing to make after 11. Ask before you order.

The kitchen creep is real. Half the time I glance at the menu and there's a tiny 'kitchen closes at 10' note under the logo. At that point just put out a pretzel rod and stop pretending.

I’ll vouch for O’Brien’s. Cash only and the back room is small, but I've eaten a burger there after midnight on a Tuesday without any side-eye. Didn't realize they shortened Sundays though—good to know.

Astoria_arch, do you know if the Houndstooth kitchen is open on Mondays? I feel like every time I'm in that stretch it's a Tuesday or Friday.

Good looks. Cash only is fine—I basically assume that's a good sign at this point.

I tried a spot off 92nd last week because a neighbor swore the kitchen went late. Walked in at 10:15, kitchen was already dark and the bartender looked at me like I asked for a steak. Hate that.

Is O’Brien’s back room actually somewhere you can sit and eat, or is it one of those standing high-top situations where you're hunched over your plate? I don't need table service, just somewhere to park it without holding my pint and my fork in the same hand.

Woodhaven_W, O’Brien’s back room is mostly high-tops, but there are two small booths against the wall. If you’re there solo and it’s after 11, the bartender won’t care if you take a booth as long as the room isn't packed. Weekend after 10, those booths go first, so plan accordingly.

The bar rail out front is fine for a plate if you’re not trying to read a paper, but the back room is quieter. The burger travels better than the club sandwich—the club arrives tall and starts sliding apart after about four minutes. My usual there is the burger and a whiskey, nothing else.

MurrayHill_M, I believe the Houndstooth runs the late fryer Monday through Friday, but Mondays are the night the cook starts breaking down early if there are no orders by 10:30. I’d call ahead or ask the bartender before you commit. Their hours are more of a vibe than a schedule.

One more general rule: if a place has a printed late-night menu on the table, that’s a better sign than a chalkboard out front. Chalkboards don’t get updated when the cook leaves early.

The chalkboard line is too accurate. I’ve been burned by a chalkboard that advertised 'late menu' while the actual kitchen had already shut down.

If the Houndstooth is 50/50 on Mondays, I’ll just stick to O’Brien’s for late food during the week. That back room is less chaotic anyway.

Has anybody here tried that little Italian place on 1st in the upper 80s that does red-sauce plates at the bar? I walked by once and it smelled right, but I didn't know if they actually serve food late or just keep the door open for regulars.

Ended up at O’Brien’s last night around 11:30. Cash only, as advertised. Got the burger medium rare and they didn't flinch. Back room had one booth open and it was chill enough to actually eat.

Gonna try Houndstooth Friday if I can get a stool. If I make the Italian place up near 88th I'll report back—half the time those old places keep a pan of meatballs going for the regulars even when the menu says closed.

Appreciate the intel.
