Been in East Harlem a long time but my sister just moved way up to Washington Heights. She wants me and my mom to come up Sunday for a proper sit-down breakfast/brunch, not a grab-and-go egg sandwich. Mom won't do diner coffee, and my sister won't do a huge line for pancakes. We're talking around 181st / Broadway, maybe Ft Washington. Is there anything that has actual table service and lets you sit for more than 20 minutes? Or am I dragging them down to the UWS?

Sit-down Sunday breakfast in Washington Heights that won't rush you?

Honestly, the heights are better for that than the UWS right now. UWS spots either want a reservation or you're drinking out of a paper cup. I'd look at the old-school Dominican places around 175th/181st, not the counter spots. La Nueva Estrella on Broadway maybe? They do real table service, strong coffee, and you can linger. It gets loud after church lets out, so go early or after 1. Don't expect a quiet little bistro, but the food's solid.

Oh, this is my whole subject! You can't judge a Washington Heights breakfast by the pancakes. The real move is the Dominican breakfast, specifically the mangú con los tres golpes — mashed plantains with fried salami, fried cheese, and eggs. La Nueva Estrella does it well, but you have to ask for the pickled onions to be extra, because they can be stingy. Have you tried their queso frito? It has to be eaten while it's still hot and crisp, or the outside turns gummy, and then what's the point?! Also call ahead for a table near the window. Their big round tables are perfect for a mom-and-sister sit-down, especially if your mom wants to take her time with coffee.

RiverdaleRambler you're gonna make me order both breakfasts. I respect the mangú evangelism. Mom can pick at the fried cheese while I handle it. Good looking out on calling ahead. Also if we end up strolling up Broadway after, I'll bring the umbrella for the sun, because that sidewalk's a whole contact sport once the church crowd spills out. Same energy as an old thread: Open umbrellas at eye level on crowded sidewalks: do you say something or just duck?

Yes! Get the hot chocolate too, it's thick enough to hold a spoon. If your mom doesn't do fried cheese, ask if they'll swap in boiled yuca with onions. A lot of these places won't list it, but if you ask before the rush they'll do it. Have you tried the bakery two doors down? I can never remember the name, but the pan de agua sells out before 11 and you can smell it from the bus stop. If the line's not too bad, grab some to take home. It's worth the small detour!

Wait, the sister hates standing in line and we're telling her to try the post-church bakery? That line is no joke. I'd do exactly what RiverdaleRambler said: get there at 10, sit near the window, let your mom get her coffee refills, and walk down the hill before the rush. EastHarlem_E, come back and tell us if it holds up. I'm done with places that drop the check before you've finished your eggs. |
