Inwood to JFK on a 6 a.m. Saturday: A/AirTrain or Penn LIRR at 3:30?
#1

Got a 6:15 a.m. Saturday flight out of JFK and I’m trying to avoid shelling out for a cab from Inwood. Is the A to Howard Beach + AirTrain actually sane at 3:30 a.m., or is that the hour when they decide the train is running local and the AirTrain platform is a wind tunnel? A buddy swears taking the 1 down to Penn and doing LIRR to Jamaica is less miserable, but that sounds like three acts of an opera just to get to Queens. What would you do?

EastHarlem_E, this is my exact kind of question! The A/AirTrain move is a secret until it isn’t! At that hour on a Saturday, check the MTA weekender or service status before you leave because the A down there is prime for track maintenance and they will not always tell you with a human voice at the station. If the A is good, Howard Beach is a much better transfer than people think—there’s an indoor corridor? Not exactly, but it’s covered enough. Have you tried using the real-time map instead of the posted countdown? I’ve seen the A's ghost clock at 168th show 12 minutes, then a train pulls in two minutes later.

EastHarlem_E, I’ve done both from Washington Heights more times than I’d like, and the answer depends on whether you value fewer moving parts or fewer chances to stand outside in the cold.

The A to Howard Beach at 3:30 a.m. has the advantage of one seat from Inwood to the AirTrain. The downside is that early Saturday is a regular maintenance window. If the line is still running through, you’re fine; if it’s split at Euclid, you’re suddenly doing a shuttle bus and the clock starts lying to you. On the platform at Howard Beach, the AirTrain runs around a loop from the station to Federal Circle and then the terminals, so if you board at Howard Beach you’re heading toward terminals—just make sure you know which terminal you’re aiming for and don’t get off at Federal Circle.

The Penn/LIRR option means the 1 downtown at 3:30 a.m., which is usually harmless but can have its own service changes. The LIRR to Jamaica is faster once you’re on it, but you’re adding a transfer to get to Penn, and if you just miss a train at that hour the wait on the concourse is not fun. I usually only choose this if the A is already flagged for work or if I’m getting a ride to Penn.

Personally, I’d plan for the A but leave a 15-minute cushion for the AirTrain, and I’d check the service status the night before and again when you wake up. The AirTrain is a separate fare, so make sure your MetroCard or OMNY isn’t dry. Good luck.

rent_stab_ric nailed it about the shuttle bus at Euclid! That’s the part that turns a one-seat idea into a luggage relay. This is basically the airport version of the earlier thread No-car move-in to a 4th-floor Carroll Gardens walk-up: multi-bus trips or hire somebody with a van? No-car move-in to a 4th-floor Carroll Gardens walk-up: multi-bus trips or hire somebody with a van? — people count the subway ride but not the block-and-a-half to the bus, the wait, the second bus, and the doors that open onto a stairwell. The AirTrain loop detail is huge too. Have you tried sitting in the back car of the A at Howard Beach? The stairs there put you closer to the AirTrain walkway? I feel like it shaves a minute but maybe I just walk fast. If you do this Saturday, report back whether the A showed up local or express, because I’m doing the same run next month.

Good call on the back car, DumboSunset. I usually ride the front because I’m annoying about being first off at 168th, but at Howard Beach the backend might actually line up better. rent_stab_ric, that thing about checking status twice is the kind of paranoia I can get behind at 3:30 a.m. I’ll check it tonight and again before I fall asleep. If the A is split at Euclid I’ll just shovel myself onto the 1 to Penn and do LIRR. Or maybe I’ll just stay up too late and hate myself. Will report back.
