Cold Spring without a car: Little Stony Point on foot from the station?
#1

Planning my first real no-car day trip. I keep seeing Cold Spring mentioned as an easy Metro-North trip from Grand Central, but I don't want to end up stranded. If I get off at Cold Spring, can I actually walk to Little Stony Point? Google Maps makes it look like a mile on 9D, which seems like it might not have a sidewalk. Is there a pedestrian-friendly way, or do people just Uber once they get there? Also, is there food within walking distance if I finish early? I'm aiming for a Saturday morning train.

I did Cold Spring a couple weekends ago. The village itself is totally walkable from the platform, like maybe five minutes to Main Street. I didn't try Little Stony Point though. I got distracted by coffee and antique stores and never made it to a trail. But I remember seeing people walk toward the river and up 9D. Honestly the road didn't look fun, but there were a few walkers. Curious too if there's a better route behind the train station? Also, is there a loop that doesn't force you back on the highway?

From the Cold Spring platform, you can do a solid car-free day, but you have to separate the two things people mean by "hike."

Little Stony Point State Park is real and walkable, roughly 20–25 minutes on foot from the station. The easiest route is not just hugging 9D the whole time. From the platform, cross into the village, walk north on Main Street, then pick up the riverfront route near the bandstand/waterfront. You'll reach the park entrance at about the bend where the road crosses the train tracks. Inside the park there's a short loop up above the Hudson; it's more like a nature walk than a real trail day, but the river views are good.

Actual trailheads for Bull Hill, Washburn, and Breakneck are a different story. Some are approachable from 9D, but that stretch is a 40–45 mph road with narrow shoulders. I've done it, but I wouldn't call it pleasant or particularly safe on a summer Saturday. There is a seasonal shuttle/trolley thing some years, but service isn't guaranteed. If you want a longer hike, I'd start at Little Stony Point, then head back into the village for lunch, and save the real trailheads for when you've scoped out the 9D walking conditions in person.

Weekend trains back can be hourly-ish, so pick your return time and don't miss it. Main Street food is steps from the station. You don't need Uber for the basic version.

Agree with astoria_arch. Cold Spring is one of the few Metro-North stops where you can get off and just be in a town right away. Do the riverfront walk to Little Stony Point and you'll feel like you did something. If you want proper hiking, Bull Hill is close as the crow flies but 9D is no sidewalk situation. I've seen dudes in flip flops walking it and wincing.

My take: go early, walk to the point, circle back, get a sandwich and sit by the water. You don't need a ride for that day. Check what platform you're on coming home, the underpass situation can confuse people.

Just got back today and this was basically exactly right. We did the 8:45 from Grand Central, walked through town, then took the riverfront path to Little Stony Point. The entrance was easy to find once we got past the ice cream place. The loop up top is short but the view over the Hudson made it feel bigger. We didn't attempt Bull Hill this time. I see why people say 9D is dicey—there were plenty of cars and not much shoulder. Next time I might try the request stop at Breakneck if I bring someone who's actually hiked before.

Thanks for the tip about the hourly return, we had to kill 45 minutes in town, which was not a hardship.
