I’m not going to pretend I never order, but I’ve cut way back by treating the decision as a money leak, not a moral failure. The killer for me is the gap between feeling done with work and actually eating. If I don’t have an answer by 8pm, I’m on the apps trying to make the minimum make sense, which is exactly how I end up with a pile of food I didn’t want.
Things that have worked:
- Keep one zero-thought meal I can make in under 10 minutes. Mine is frozen pork dumplings boiled, then tossed in chili crisp with whatever green is still alive.
- Buy a cooked protein on the way home on days I know I’ll crash. I can make two meals out of a supermarket roast chicken before I touch a delivery app.
- Force a walk-around-the-block rule before ordering. If I still want the food after ten minutes outside, I order, but often I just end up at the corner store for milk or nothing.
- Write the app total on a sticky note on the fridge. Not to shame myself, but to compare with what I already have.
I’d rather hear from people who don’t have a car, don’t have a big freezer, and can’t do a Sunday cook-a-thon. What gets you through the 8pm crash without spending sit-down money?

Okay this is me every single week. I have groceries in the fridge but by 8pm I'm staring at the apps. I tried doing pickup instead of delivery but they still add a fee! Does anyone know if the bodega down the block has hot food? I keep forgetting to check. This is kind of like the “Where do you go for a quiet solo pint before the crowd hits?” thread Where do you go for a quiet solo pint before the crowd hits? because I’m tired and want someone else to make a decision. Otis, when you do the walk-around rule, do you leave your phone at home? I’d probably just order while walking lol.

Beth, delete the apps or at least turn off notifications. Mine were sending me 'dinner tonight?' right at 7pm like they knew I was cooked. The bodega hot bar is the move. It’s not cheap in the way people claim, but it’s already there and the line moves fast. Otis is right about the walk, but I’d shorten it to a block because by 8pm I’m not trying to exercise. If you’re near a 24-hour fruit guy, grab two eggs and a roll, maybe add a pepper. You get it.

Wait, Otis, the frozen dumplings idea is basically my whole personality!!! But you also have to keep the sauce pre-mixed in a squeeze bottle. That’s the part nobody does. I make a jar of chili crisp, black vinegar, and a splash of soy on Sunday and it lives in the fridge for weeks.
For the 8pm crash, have you tried a snack dinner? It’s a grown-up Lunchable: cheese, crackers, pickles, apple, maybe salami. It feels fancy but it’s just assembly and keeps me away from the apps. I also pre-portion rice in the freezer in ziplocks; one bag in the microwave while you shower is a real meal base.
EastHarlem_E is right about bodega hot bars for decision fatigue. I just need the food at home already or I’ll add a Gatorade and a cookie. big_city_beth, have you tried a lock-screen note that says 'you already bought food'? Cheesy but it helps.
