Anniversary dinner in Carroll Gardens on a Tuesday: quiet enough to talk, not another small plates counter?
#1

Hi everyone — my partner and I are doing an anniversary next Tuesday, but our babysitter window is 6:30-9:30 so we’re staying in our own neighborhood for once. We live near the Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens border. Looking for a place where we can actually hear each other and not be rushed, but not a jacket-required deal. We keep running into either wine bars with tiny plates or loud natural wine spots, which are fine usually but not for this. I thought maybe Frankies 457? Do they still do full pastas? Or any old-school Italian left that isn’t a tourist trap? Also is Tuesday just dead and maybe we can walk in?

Welcome to the neighborhood. Frankies is a safe pick but it can still get that Court St hum and the back room is better than the sidewalk. If you want quiet with real chairs, try Giardino or Savelli on Smith/Union, old enough that nobody's filming for TikTok. Tuesday at 6:30 you'll probably get a walk-in at either one, but I'd call ahead because the early old-timers take the booths. Skip the small plates trap at June or whatever the new spot is. For one block further, Lucali is not worth a babysitter-window line. You want tablecloths and a single menu, not a conversion story. Get the chicken parm at Savelli if they still run it.

Sorry to jump in—this might be a dumb question but I'm in Manhattan and always thought Carroll Gardens was all brownstones and maybe one restaurant street. Is Court/Smith actually good at 6:30 on a Tuesday, or is everything closed from the post-COVID early dinner block? I got burned in the West Village recently where the place I picked was on a 'winter schedule' and the kitchen closed at 8. If I do a similar anniversary there later in the month, would an 8pm table be risky? Also DykerNewbie if you don't mind, did you have to book a babysitter 3 weeks out in that area or did you use a local service? I'm still new to all this.

Thanks CobbleHill_C, Savelli sounds exactly like what I had in my head. I'm going to call tomorrow. UptownUnfamiliar, not dumb at all—I grew up here thinking the same and only later realized how many old red-sauce places are tucked around corners. Tuesday at 8 is less risky in Carroll Gardens than West Village; several sit-down places do last seating 9-9:30 but call because some owners just decide on a Tuesday. The sitter thing: we use a neighbor's high schooler, but she books up fast. We started looking around two weeks out and got one of her last slots. If you need a service maybe ask in the Brooklyn parent groups, not me because I still just panic text her mom.

DykerNewbie, if you call Savelli and they say 'we're full', don't let them push you to the bar. Ask for the back room or an 8:15 table—your window is tight but 8:30 works. Uptown, 8pm in that stretch is okay if you confirm by phone same day. Racines and La Vara used to be the go-to for a later Tuesday but they can lean louder. One more old-school rec: Lucia’s Sicilian or whatever they're calling it now on Court has real pitch and no wine list lecture. Honestly the move for an anniversary in that zone is a place where the host has been there twenty years and says 'I'll put you in a corner.' Those spots aren't gone yet.

DykerNewbie, thank you for the babysitter info. Panic texting the mom is a valid model. I'm adding Savelli and Lucia’s to my list. CobbleHill_C, you're convincing me to cross the bridge for a weeknight because the quiet old-school thing is exactly what I miss. Do any of these places actually have a dessert worth holding the sitter late for, or do people just get an espresso and leave? I know that sounds picky but if I'm paying a sitter past 9:30 I want tiramisu that isn't frozen or some 'deconstructed' thing. Also is there a bad night to avoid—like Monday all the Brooklyn restaurants close?

Update from last night: we ended up at Savelli and it was exactly the right call. Had a 7pm table in the corner, not rushed, no music blasting, and yes chicken parm is still there. We split the baked clams and I think I fell back in love with my wife over a tiramisu that was definitely not frozen, UptownUnfamiliar. They also didn't rush us at 9:20, which is rare when you're clearly in a sitter countdown. CobbleHill_C, thanks again—I owe you a coffee or a plate of clams. And for anyone reading later: call, don't try to book on some app; the host actually wrote it in a paper book. Felt like a tiny miracle.
