Liberty road game in Astoria/LIC—any bar with MSG audio on, not just silent captions?
#1

I've been getting into the Liberty this season after going to my first game at Barclays with a coworker. I want to watch the away game this Friday. I live on the Astoria/LIC line and every bar I've tried just has the game on one small TV with captions and the music going. Is it possible to find a place that actually plays the MSG audio? Or is that only a playoff thing? I don't need a watch party, just want to hear the broadcast without asking a bartender to turn it up and getting side-eye. Any spots near 30th Ave or Court Square where it isn't a fight?

I'm in the same boat! I tried a place near Queens Plaza last week for the game and they only put the sound on after like six of us asked. But then trivia started in the back and they cut it again. It was rough. I don't know the area well yet. If you find a place that reliably does audio, please share. Does Friday being a road game make it harder? I'd even sit at the bar and eat wings if that helps.

@DykerNewbie You have to ask for the MSG feed specifically!! Not just "the game"—half those bartenders will put on ESPN2 or the home team feed and then say the sound is already on a football game. Huge difference!! In Astoria, try the back room at The 31st Ave Taproom—I've had them switch the main speakers to the Liberty pregame and keep it there, but you have to ask before tip, not during the second quarter. Have you tried Court Square Draft House? They have the full MSG package and a bartender who is a Liberty fan, so you're not alone. The real issue is if the Rangers or Knicks have a game the same night, you're cooked.

Honestly, skip the big sports bars. The smaller Irish pubs on 30th Ave or the ones up by Ditmars are more likely to flip the sound if the game is the only thing on. The big spots with 20 TVs don't care. I caught a Liberty game at a little spot on 34th Ave last month, asked nice, and the guy put it on the whole front room. Don't bother with LIC rooftops, they're too scene-y.

Thanks @BagelCrumb and @ForestHills_F! So the move is to ask for the MSG feed and get there early? Do I need to worry about it being standing room by 7 on a Friday? One place told me they only do sound for "playoffs" which I thought was weird because the Liberty have been good. Is that just a lazy answer, or do some bars decide only playoff games get audio? Also @OzoneParkOllie if I find somewhere with wings and audio I'll post it here.

@DykerNewbie It's absolutely lazy!! The Liberty have been one of the best teams in the league and the regular season games have real crowds now. A lot of bars still treat it like a niche thing, but the ones that lean women's sports or have a dedicated WNBA night will do it right. Have you tried the new spot under the 7 train near Vernon-Jackson? They have a huge projector and they changed their whole schedule for the Liberty game last Sunday! The bartender told me they're doing it every game now because it brings in a bigger dinner crowd than the out-of-town baseball. I'll be there Friday if anyone wants to grab a seat.

@HudsonYardsHype I know that projector spot. Good if you get there before 6:30, after that the bar seats are gone and you're watching under a glare. I was there for a Liberty game a couple weeks ago and the manager switched one TV to a UFC prelim in the third quarter. The crowd nearly started a riot. So make sure the whole room is committed. Otherwise the back room at a low-key pub is still safer.

Update: I tried Court Square Draft House from @BagelCrumb last night for the game but I mixed up the day. They didn't have the live game because it wasn't on yet, but the bartender was super nice and said they'd definitely have the audio Friday. I felt dumb asking for a game that wasn't on. Is it easier when they play at Barclays? Like do the bars around the arena all do sound automatically? I still might just go to the projector spot and hope for a seat.

@OzoneParkOllie don't feel dumb!! Half the bars don't even know the WNBA schedule, that's why I check the Liberty social pages for official watch parties. They sometimes list bars that commit to the full game with audio, not just one silent TV. Around Barclays it's different—bars on Flatbush put the Liberty on with sound because they capture the pre/post crowd. But the official watch parties are next level! Last one I went to had the radio call synced to the TV and the place gave out posters. If you just want a reliable spot in Astoria, Court Square Draft House is probably your safest bet, but still call ahead and say "MSG feed for the Liberty" so they put it on the main speakers before tip.

@BagelCrumb the official watch party thing is the move!! I went to one in Manhattan earlier this season and they had the sound up over the whole bar, plus a Liberty rep handing out white towels. It felt like a mini Barclays. For Friday, @DykerNewbie, I'd call Court Square Draft House this afternoon and ask if they'll be showing the Liberty feed on the main system. Don't just walk in at 7 and hope. If they say yes, I'll be there. If not, the projector spot under the 7 is rowdy but fun. Let us know what you pick!
