M104 southbound at Broadway & 110: old pole, temp stand, and nobody covers the sign
#1

Anyone have the deal with the M104 southbound stop at Broadway & 110? The pole is still there on the east side of Broadway just above 110, but drivers keep pulling up about a block south by the plywood and the temporary bus stop sign. I waved at the old pole Monday and the driver just shook his head and kept rolling. Then I walked down and he acted like that was the only stop. Is the old sign just dead and nobody took it down? On the uptown side it’s business as usual.

Wait, is that by the Columbia gates? I just started subletting up here and I couldn’t tell if the orange netting thing was a stop or just construction. I’ve been walking to 116th anyway because I don’t trust that block. Do you use BusTime? It keeps showing the stop by 110 but the arrow is like in the middle of the intersection for me.

I’ve seen it too. The real pickup has been south of 110 ever since they put up the scaffolding for the old bank building. If you stand at the old pole, some drivers will stop if they need to let people off, but in the morning they don’t.

There’s a temporary pole next to the blue plywood with a little MTA sign ziptied to it. People miss it because it doesn’t look official. Not your fault. MTA left the old signs up.

The current situation is the result of a temporary bus stop relocation that was posted in the project advisory, but the old bus stop marker was never properly bagged or removed. I’ve lived on 111th for years and I pass through here at least twice a day. The active southbound M104 stop is now in front of the construction fence about 75 feet south of 110th, near the newer curb extension. If you check the MTA’s bus stop list, or just look for the small blue temporary sign, you’ll see it there.

From what I understand, drivers are instructed not to serve the old pole once a temporary stop is active, mostly because the old space is too close to the crosswalk and the sidewalk shed creates a bad merge. Some operators will still stop there after 8 p.m. when traffic is lighter, but not reliably.

My advice: use the temporary pole, not the old stop. If you hang by the newsstand thinking you can flag it, you’ll probably get left. The walk from 110th to the temp stop is not long enough for a fare complaint, but if you’re disabled or carrying something heavy, the slope by the shed is annoying. The uptown side hasn’t changed and probably won’t until the shed moves.

Appreciate that. Grabbed it there yesterday. Bus still came in pairs, but at least it stopped. I got no beef with drivers for following the temp sign; I just wish they’d cover the old pole.

Anyway, it’s not the only local wild goose chase. If you’re still hunting breakfast, we already covered it in Where’s the bodega BEC with bacon that’s actually crispy and a roll that survives the walk? Where’s the bodega BEC with bacon that’s actually crispy and a roll that survives the walk?
