Every time the Knicks play on a Tuesday it feels like every spot below 14th is three deep by 6:30. I don't need table service or some big special. Just a stool, the MSG feed, and a bartender who doesn't act like I'm robbing them by ordering one beer and watching the whole second quarter.
Last year I tried a place on 4th Ave that claimed "all games with sound" but they had captions on and some radio station over the speakers. Not doing that again.
Anyone got a reliable spot below 34th where the Knicks audio actually stays on?

I hear that. The "sound on" claim is basically a lie half the year.
For a stool, try The Half Pint on West 3rd. It's NYU-adjacent, but if you get there before 6:15 you can grab the rail. They usually do Knicks audio unless there's a big college football game. Downside: it gets loud around 8.

Half Pint is fine, but if you're already in the LES, I'd go early to Kelly's on Avenue A before the happy hour crowd. They have a back room with a set and the audio is real.
Not sure about Tuesday specifically. Sometimes they turn on Rangers if both are on, so check the schedule or ask the bartender before you settle in.

Okay, I'm new to this. How early do you need to show up for a 7:30 Knicks tip on a Tuesday?
I went to a place in Williamsburg last week for a Liberty game and got there at 7 and it was already no seats. Also, do bars post if they have game audio or is it just assumed? Sorry if this is obvious.

Firstwinter, for a small spot on a Knicks weeknight, if tip is 7:30 I'd be there by 6:45 for a stool. Some places post on their Instagram story something like "tonight's sound: Knicks," but it's rare.
Don't assume. I usually call or DM. Also ask if they'll keep MSG audio into the second half, because some places only do sound until a bigger game comes on.

Kelly's back room is a solid call, but the audio in the front bar can be weird if the back isn't open.
For a Tuesday, I'd say try The Canuck on 9th Ave. It's hockey-first, but they'll put Knicks on the big screens with sound if there's no Rangers game. If both are on, it's Rangers audio, so check the schedule first.

Uptown, nobody's standing three deep for a regular season Tuesday unless it's playoffs.
The Grange on 141st isn't a sports bar, but they have a projector and a decent soundbar, and the bartender has no problem switching from ESPN to MSG. It's more of a neighborhood spot. You won't get that midtown anxiety.

The Grange is great but be ready for projector lag if they're streaming. I went for a Liberty game and the picture froze right at the last two minutes. Could have been their wifi.
I'd stick with a place that has real cable for the Knicks if you care about the last possession.

That's the thing. A lot of those neighborhood spots use a streaming box and you get the 30 second delay. Your phone pings before the score happens on screen and it ruins the whole point.
If you want real cable and a stool, O'Hanlon's on 14th maybe? They have enough TVs to switch one to the Knicks with audio in the back. It gets busy by 8, but there are usually standing spots in the back room. Not a hidden gem, just consistent.

Thanks for the call/DM tip. I didn't realize bars would answer that.
Also good to know about streaming delay. Is there a way to tell by looking at the screen if it's cable vs streaming, or do you just ask? I'd hate to be that person.

Usually if you see a Roku or Fire Stick UI, or a YouTube TV pause icon, it's streaming. If it's a direct MSG feed with the channel bug and ticker, probably cable.
But honestly just ask "is this on cable or streaming?" The bartender may laugh, but they'll tell you. Also avoid places using the MSG app, too many pop-ups.

Yeah, the MSG app is fine at home and awful in a bar.
I checked The Canuck schedule this week and no Rangers on Tuesday, so that might be the play. I'll try to get there by 6:45. If it's a bust, I'll hit Kelly's back room.

If anyone's coming from uptown and doesn't want the hike, The Grange has real cable now I think, not the wifi feed. Either way, it's a decent backup.
And if you're up here on a Saturday or Sunday anyway, the earlier thread Sit-down Sunday breakfast in Washington Heights that won't rush you? has good sit-down breakfast spots in Washington Heights for before a matinee.
