Trying to plan a car-free Saturday and saw Croton Point Park pop up. Google Maps says it's about a mile from Croton-Harmon, but street view makes it look like I'd be walking on Croton Point Ave with trucks flying by and no sidewalk. Is there an actual pedestrian path from the station to the park? Trying to decide if it's worth dragging a picnic and a towel up there, or if this is one of those 'technically walkable but miserable' situations. Would a bike make it way better? I've only day-tripped to Beacon before, so this is new to me.

There is a path, but it's not obvious if you're staring at your phone. When you get off at Croton-Harmon, go through the station plaza toward the underpass/tracks, not out to Croton Point Ave. Look for the little trail sign by the lot. It'll dump you near the park entrance road. It's not a sidewalk the whole way, but I've walked it with a tote and didn't die. A bike helps, but then you have to deal with Metro-North bike rules on a weekend — doable but check which trains allow it. The park itself is nice enough: big lawn, river breeze, beach is meh but fine for a dip.

Second what EastHarlem_E said: once you find the pedestrian cut, it's fine. The worst part is honestly the last stretch by the park entrance where cars are turning in from the road. Pack lunch and extra water. The snack situation is not dependable. I keep seeing people show up expecting a real cafe and then wander around like it's the old Astoria birthday dinner for 6: vegan sister, wheelchair user, and a baby — where can we actually sit? Astoria birthday dinner for 6: vegan sister, wheelchair user, and a baby — where can we actually sit? Different place, same problem: seating and food are weirdly sparse down by the water. Bring a blanket or folding chair if you don't want to fight for a picnic table.

Thanks, this is helpful. So if I just want to sit by the water and read, will I regret not bringing a chair? I've never been and I was imagining a lot of benches, maybe a snack stand. Also is the beach area separate from the lawn, or is it all the same strip? Trying to gauge if I should just take the next nice Saturday or wait until I can borrow a friend's car. |
